Established in the late 70’s, the Port Hedland Yacht Club has become an iconic part of the Port Hedland
Community. Arguably one of the best venues in Port Hedland to witness beautiful sunsets while enjoying
something to eat and drink.
With over 1700 members and a growing junior sailor member group, the club is looking to a future where we can engage with, and give back to the Hedland community.
Throughout 2018 and 2019 a small but dedicated group of volunteers from the Port Hedland Yacht Club have been developing and running a program dubbed “Come And Try Sailing” or CATS. The goal of the program is simple; Give the people of the Port Hedland Community the opportunity to try sailing.
This program whilst simple is radically ground-breaking within the sailing fraternity. Yacht and sailing clubs the country over demand a high level of commitment from people who wish to join a sailing event or even just try sailing to see if they like it. The standard approach from clubs the country over is to demand that people financially commit to the club before any form of access is granted.
We do things differently in Port Hedland, its part of what gives our town its own personality. The CATS program demands no commitment of any kind from its participants. There is no pressure to join the club, there is no maximum number of times anyone can attend, and it will always remain completely free to participate. In short, the CATS program runs for the purpose of sharing the joy of sailing with as many people as we can in the most inclusive way possible.
The Port Hedland Yacht Club provides free access to sailing dinghies, life jackets, instructors, shade structures, a safety boat and even drinking water and sunscreen. The only thing our participants need to bring is themselves, and they do. In the past 2 years we have introduced nearly 300 people to sailing through our program. That’s 300 people from Port Hedland who have had the opportunity to try sailing mostly for the first time absolutely free from obligation or cost.
In the coming 12 months we would like to go bigger. There are 14,000 people who call Port Hedland home and we would like to reach them all.
Since the construction of the new building, the town has seen some changes and our membership base is no
There are more people than ever before looking to make Hedland their home and we would like to give them a little more sophistication.
